An ice lantern is a kind of folk art that has spread all over Northern China. In early times, ice lanterns were used for illumination by farmers who raised horse on Songnen Plain and fishermen who fished along the Songhua River. At that time, the method of making ice lanterns was very simple: water is poured into a bucket and warmed before it becomes completely frozen, so that an ice brick can be separated from the bucket. The brick of ice is removed before the middle is frozen so that the water can be poured out leaving a cavity in the middle of the brick. A candle is placed in the middle and the flame is protected from the winds by the walls of ice on the brick. As the practice became more wide-spread, people later began to make more creative ice lanterns for decoration during the Spring and the Lantern Festival.
